Competition or coordination? Impact of short-term and long-term language experience on language regulation and cognitive functions in bilinguals.

Principal Investigator: dr hab. Zofia Wodniecka-Chlipalska, prof. UJ

The main goal of the proposed research program is to contribute to the scientific understanding of how knowledge of a second language shapes cognitive and linguistic processes. Although bilingualism and second language learning have gained great scientific interest in the past two decades, still little is known about the precise mechanisms that help overcome competition present in a bilingual mind. We propose a series of studies to: 1) demonstrate how a short-term and long term exposure to a second language impacts the ease with which the native language is used; 2) identify the fine-grained mechanisms that allow successful language cooperation in multilingual speakers; and 3) understand how different types of language experience contribute to the hypothesized link between language control and cognitive control.
